I added a pigtail to the battery for my tender. The amp meter on the dash went up (14.5ish to about 15ish), not nearly as high as your did, and I've had no issues, but I noticed it. That's all...

For the record I was back from our trip about a week, when cruising one afternoon about 5 miles from my (local) dealer.
My voltmeter was pegged max, and no longer moving at all, so I hiked over to the dealer. He tested, and 45 minutes later I was down the road with a new voltage regulator. She's now steady as a rock.
So much for the guy from the "selling" dealership (Eden Prairie MN) that told me to "put ice on the voltage regulator" and honestly said "all the newer regulators do that".
Told that dude I wasn't buying it and he really didn't care. Thankful I did make it through the trip.
