I was thinking he fixated on the pole, and managed by the skin of his teef to not dead center it.

Made the same mistake once ( over driving my ability to hold my lane ) fortunately I went down as soon as I hit the dirt. No cliffs, just big trees to avoid. I came out of it with a severely scratched up full face helmet, road burn on a Levi jacket and a little cut on my finger. O , and a heavily damaged bike !.

It does look like it changed angle quickly. I bet you're right over corrected after he touched metal, his knee comes in pretty quick too.

I’ve done it before too but I was fortunate that there was a big, paved run off area. Glad yours didn’t beat you up too badly.

O it wasn’t a soft landing, after bouncing down the road on my stomach for a while and having the face shield ripped off my helmet, I flipped over on to my back and continued to slide down the highway.
