If you move it forward slowly, you’ll notice that it looks like he scraped metal, overreacted and stood the bike up too high than was needed to recover and that’s when he went along for the ride. Whatever the outcome, he had an opportunity to save it before he hit the dirt, he did not react. Perhaps he was doing all he could to avoid the pole?

Self-preservation is a powerful motivator.
Made the same mistake once ( over driving my ability to hold my lane ) fortunately I went down as soon as I hit the dirt. No cliffs, just big trees to avoid. I came out of it with a severely scratched up full face helmet, road burn on a Levi jacket and a little cut on my finger. O , and a heavily damaged bike !.

O it wasn’t a soft landing, after bouncing down the road on my stomach for a while and having the face shield ripped off my helmet, I flipped over on to my back and continued to slide down the highway.
