Here's one I saw yesterday.
I've read the ***** are to counteract the magnetic deviation caused by the ship's hull. There's also a vertical iron rod on the front of the pedestal for the same reason, and inside the pedestal are small magnets used to fine tune the compass to show the right direction. Pretty cool they could figure that out 300 years ago or more.

You're absolutely right Mike. They do have a vertical rod ahead of the pedestal and small access ports around it which must be for the magnets. It's unbelievable how well built those things are given the age. The brass covers on the opening over the compass are still nice and solid. They are very steady, heavy, and smooth this many years later.

Here's an interesting find. This is an early 20's White C Cab flatbed. It was converted into a heavy wrecker at some point. It's impressive how big they built that thing. It's all Steel and wood beams. It's unfortunate that such a rare machine is just sitting there rusting away.

Would be quite a restoration project at this point, about all the remains would be good for would be templates for building new.

Its way beyond saving. What a shame. Especially considering it's nearly 100 years old. It's difficult to find any "White" trucks on google. Imagine how rare that is.
