I'm guessing the shift handle is right off the transmission shaft, reach down under your left thigh to shift. I've ridden a couple like that, long time ago, was popular on choppers for a while. Not at all a comfortable way to ride, but interesting. Best to shift into neutral before stopping, could get embarrassing if you had to put your left foot down in gear. Some of those bikes would just thump away even popping the clutch. That steering damper is probably a good idea, lot of those raked front ends could get wild, I rode one that took a real firm grip with the right hand when reaching down for the shifter, wheel wanted to fall to one side without holding it straight all the time. downright dangerous. That was back in the days when small front wheels were the thing, today's 19" and bigger don't seem to have that problem.
