Know what's more depressing than freezing sn@w? Warm weather and piles of salt on the road, and no rain in the forecast to clean it off. Looks like that's gonna be most of the next two weeks here. Took the short way to the food store today in the van, but without the salt, would have been the long way with one of the sidecar rigs. Might get to start wrenching again, though, plenty of that left to do.

Put the Noco smart charger on the van yesturday, truck's on it for an overnight. I try to find excuses to 2 or 3 wheel in salt free weather, but in winter I can procrastinate going past my mailbox till cage batteries won't crank them. Used to be able to let batteries sit 6 months no problem, but modern batteries won't last long even if they only sit for a month occasionally. Haven't for me, anyway, keep em charged or get a new one the second winter.

Neighbor has an older Civic, more front seat room than most late model suv's I've been in. Lady friend has an '04 Accord, and that thing's sardine can torture for me. Gas mileage be damned, I run errands with my van, more room than anything but a truck, but the pickup I got last year is my future, nothing but trucks from now on. Wouldn't buy most of those either, I'd never buy anything with a center console. That's probably less than 1% of trucks, up here anyway, one I got was the first one I'd seen without one in years.

Manual transmissions are pretty easy, but automatics... I had a retaining clip break in an '86 Towncar, C6 trans. The valve didn't come all the way, was blocked by the case fortunately, but lost 2nd gear. It would rev pretty high in first, then slam hard into 3rd. Was somewhere around 30 valves in that thing, carefully took one at a time out and cleaned them (full of black gunk, near 180,000 miles) and reassembled them. Took hours. At least I had all 4 gears after. I loved that car, roads that would splash a cup of coffee all over you in most cars barely rippled the surface in that land yacht.

I just had a grinding sound all the time. Gears and synchros looked perfect.

A little post dinner dessert.
