At the airline, the opinions that mattered most were, in order, finance department, management, engineers, and mechanics. The ones that were right most often were mechanics, engineers, management on rare occasions, and finance wasn't even in the "right" picture.

Signing off questionable stuff is what management is for. Also called, pencil whipping.

I had visits from engineers that had learned from their experience, and part of that learning was, ask the people that have done this before, understand the systems, and most likely will see right away if you're on the wrong path and can point you in the right direction. Might sound like they were inexperienced, but these were almost always the best and brightest of our engineers, and were usually right the first time. Good engineers - and mechanics - value the input of other good people.

I haven't lifted the front wheel on any of my Harleys, just isn't worth changing a belt to me. Plus, I'm a bit of an anchor anyway.

None. You can lift the wheel on any Harley if you try hard enough and nothing breaks. I've had both wheels in the air with a hard tail WL45 (WWII 45" Harley). Jumping it off road - but not much, hard tails off road are butt busters.
