Whoops, the pulp plant north of town had an incident on Friday...
Peace River Pulp Division Recovery Boiler
PEACE RIVER, AB - DMI Peace River Pulp Division experienced a tube leak in their recovery boiler on September 22, 2017. As a result of this leak, a smelt water reaction occurred within their recovery boiler. There were no injuries to mill personnel. The resulting steam explosion inside the recovery boiler caused damage, which is currently being assessed to determine the extent of damage and required repairs.
“The Peace River Pulp Division would like to extend its appreciation to those team members who responded to the incident with precision and dedication. It was exceptional,” stated Bill Downing, PRPD Mill Manager. “We are thankful no team members were injured, who are our first priority. We are working together to determine our next steps with various support groups, but we do anticipate an interruption to production while we do our investigation, inspections, and repairs.”
The recovery boiler is an integral part of the kraft pulping process. The purpose of the recovery boiler is to reclaim the spent pulping chemicals in the process of combustion and to capture the heating value as steam to generate electricity and supply process steam demands.

I guess it was quite the boom. Luckily no one was hurt. Paula's little cousin was about 20 ft away when it happened.
