Once it dries you can go back over it with a wet Scotch Brite pad to clean up those edges.

No Scotch Brite! , that would scratch the finish. Carefully use a razor blade and work from thin to thick , to remove the sh-mere.

I think it's a marblette, should be OK unless he really leans on it.
