Gives you time to draw. Elk feel safe in the dark timber, and even if they see you draw they stand there a second or so. Whitetail buck will bolt almost instantly if he busts you drawing back.
Larry, mid '90's, my friend killed a Huge 6x6 in the San Juan Mountains in Colorado. I helped him pack it out. I was simply in shock. My first bull up close. Hell, he was bigger than my horse. That led to many years and lots of $$$$$ chasing the damn things...

Back in the early 80's, my Grandpa was out hunting, saw an elk, shot it. Walked up to it and realized he shot a Caribou. No big deal he thought. Gutted and left the animal there (was a cool day) went to the Fish and Wildlife office and asked to buy a Caribou tag. Well, you just can't by a tag for them as they are under the Protected Species Act.

That was Paula's and my Friday night. One too many whiskeys/rums without supper for this guy. In bed by 9:30 that night. Hahaha.
