You are correct on someone else calling at least 50 yards behind you. They are so focused on where the call is coning from that they rarely see the hunter.
Gives you time to draw. Elk feel safe in the dark timber, and even if they see you draw they stand there a second or so. Whitetail buck will bolt almost instantly if he busts you drawing back.

Larry, mid '90's, my friend killed a Huge 6x6 in the San Juan Mountains in Colorado. I helped him pack it out. I was simply in shock. My first bull up close. Hell, he was bigger than my horse. That led to many years and lots of $$$$$ chasing the damn things...

Hahaha....

Didn't go out last nite Stan. Went grocery shopping, vacuum sealed some meat, watched a chick flick and cuddled...

Not much of a life...
