Hey Tim, I hunted all over the Rockies, but on Public land. Most herd bulls run the other way when they hear a call. Very small window during bow season it works, but I screwed it up so many times till I figured out I needed someone to call for me, about a hundred yards behind me. Bulls that came in always held back, so when I called they were always out of bow range.

Got a good mature 5x5 with my bow when I finally figured it out

I was able to call over 2 cows with a diaphragm call two weeks ago. They were in the back side of a quarter that we didn't have permission to hunt on. Those two cows were stirred right up. We didn't think much of it and then my son said they were coming, and they were coming. Heads up high, smelling and trotting. They got to the barb wire fence, jumped over and boom it was over.

You are correct on someone else calling at least 50 yards behind you. They are so focused on where the call is coning from that they rarely see the hunter.

Elk ... In northern Michigan we have a herd of elk ... I remember being a snot nosed kid and going deer hunting ( no gun for me yet ) with my dad for the first time ... In short order we ran across a bull ( in the Atlanta, MI area ) and I was amazed at how large the deer were !

This herd bull looked like it might have been wounded. Was walking pretty funny on the rear left. Couldn't tell it it was because of the ice or if someone wounded him.
