Yep, we are trying to get money for a new station. We are a very small rural department and rely on state and county funds in addition to fund raising. One of the things I suggested if we get a new building is to get a large commercial washer and dryer to clean the gear after fires. It's a legit issue for sure.
On thing that has changed here SOMEWHAT is the elimination of going inside a burning structure to battle a fire if there is no patient inside. For some that is a rite of passage but I will pass and tell my son the same thing. The days of the interior attack without a patient are numbered. It's pretty pointless.

Turn out gear is only one issue addressed in the study. A number of recommendations are there to make firefighting safer with regards to long term exposure, some of it simple, some of it not so simple. That particular study was from several years ago, there may be an update available.

Eventually, I preferred to be pump operator than running into a burning building. Especially in the summer. Hahaha
