3 bitches ismore like it. The Coast Guard eventually surveyed the bottom with submersibles. the Fitz is brokrn in pieces and hit the bottom under power leaving a giant trench along the bottom. The hole was torn open and left a trail of taconite, ore along the bottom. The crew never had a chance to get to the lifeboats. The brave captain of the anderson had turned around and wa rushing to render assistance if possible but her lights simply disappeared in front of him and he later said he feared she was blown off course and looked to close to shoal waters. The crew never had a chance. By the time we arrived on scene the water was eerily calm and the fog was wierdly thick we were running patterns when I spotted something white against the black water. It was a life ring from the Fitzgerald, really beat up. It was all we found. It is in the museum at Whitefish point I am told. It was one of the saddest things I've seen and we were all pretty shaken as the Fitz was 10 times bigger then us...It turned out we stress fractured our hull worse then we knew, Our beloved tug that saved us had the bow split while ice breaking the following year and had to be run aground in the St Marys river to save her. She was decommisioned and turned into a museum in Cpe May I was told. I got the news when I was working as a search and rescue coxswain at Harsens Island as I remember..Weasel and I were saddened beyond belief but felt blessed to be able to raise our kids. Weasel became an expert iin fine scale modeling published author in Scale Model magazine and built a replica of our ship in the colors of the her British ceremonial Silver Jubilee finery at the time we won the Order of the Golden Snipe award for excellence, the first time we had ever taken it away from the Navy. Captain Daurgherty spent much of his retirement in Istanbul and on his deathbed recited the "Friends, Romans, Countrymen" speech bi Marc Antony, a scholar to the end. Grand Haven, our port, is Coast Guard city USA by act of Congress and is home to a festival every summer. I keep telling myself I need to take my kids and grandkids.
