One of the guys I shoot guns with at the range has been a machinist his entire career. Last month he lost half his thumb on his left hand to a chip coming off a piece of nylon stock he was cutting a thread on !

Rule #1 for machining. Don't wear gloves. It's just another piece of clothing to grab and pull you in.
