Agreed, although I had a buddy who lived in one and at first most chores were done by home owners/volunteers, then it got so everything was hired out and fee's went skyward.
Not for everybody, but they are an alternative to some.

Wasn't an alternative for us. We were told when we bought there was no HOA, but then the city and developer sprung the HOA on us. The builder did not have a clue, or did not care if we were surprised later.

Greg, I guess technically the developer surprised us with the HOA about a year or so after we bought in this subdivision. Then when we contacted the city to ask WTF? they said the area in which we bought was always to be an HOA, even if the builder did not know or knew and did not tell us. We had no vote. The developer did turn over control of the HOA to us a few years ago but we cannot vote to not be a part of it
