The shifter shaft is made of some pretty hard stuff. I have had a very similar issue a couple times. Turned out to be the shift lever stripped both times and not the shaft itself..

WELLLLLL........ the deadbeats called the Atty. at 4 PM and said they wanted to get their stuff out.Bunch of phone calls between owner and Atty and me (why me?) and they're letting them get their stuff. Owner called the guy and read him the riot act, telling him that they are to get everything out including the dog crap in the bedroom. He's having a State policeman (BS) check the house out and if there is anything left behind or any damage done that he's having them arrested.(haha)

Deadbeats and one guy just showed up. Gonna be fun getting the stuff out in the dark, since half the lights in the house don't work. They were too lazy to change bulbs when they burned out...can't make this sh*t up.
