Make sure the slots are square to the body of the car. If the slots aren't square, you don't have a prayer
If necessary, flip the block over and recut to make sure they are square. It's rubbing against the center curb that slows them down the most. Friction is the enemy.
Polish the axles and wheel to remove any burrs.
The weight is best located just rear of center of the car.
The wedge shapes tend to be faster.
