Ken, ever changed the bearings in a rear wheel driven pulley ? There are two bearings stacked on top of each other and a spacer that gets trapped under them. My question is there is a little free play in the spacer , appears to be about .050 of an inch but no mention of the exact amount in the manual.
What you want to be concerned about is if tightening the axle nut will put unsupported pressure on an inner bearing race, pressing the ***** against the side of the outer race groove; in other words, if there's a gap in the spacer(s) between the bearings' inner races, tightening the axle nut will push that bearing/spacer stack tight together, and offset the inner/outer bearing races - the outer races won't center themselves if pushed into place by the inner race. With the correct spacing, the ***** will be centered in the inner and outer races, not being pushed against a side with offset races. If I've made any sense, try to picture how your situation will affect where the ***** will track in the races.
