When Japan invaded the Philippines during WWII, the supplier for manila rope was gone.
The river bottoms here, and a lot of other places, were covered in hemp to make rope and such with. It still grew wild in a few places along the river when I was a kid

Reminds me of some of my dorm buddies from the 70's

Wasn't Hemp the 4th Stooge? I never really cared for him, the original 3 consisting of Larry, Moe and Curly were my favorites. Uh, wait...Shemp...never mind.
