Been rearranging furniture in my office in preparation for moving the couch and love seat (more like a chair-and-a-half) to the basement. Got the contractor we want to finish the basement coming over this evening at 5. Going to talk more details and see if he can get started on the permit stuff

Yessir, plus witha permit it is inspected for safety and that helps with insurance if, God forbid, anything ever happens down there. Or if we ever sell and move. No permit & inspection = no aditional sq footage is counted

I'm not real hip into how it all works. Just bought my first house 5 years ago.... just know you don't need a permit out in the country. The additional square footage would be good when it comes time to sell, but wouldn't it increase value, therefore, taxes as well?

Yep, higher taxes too. I am not really concerned with the value add of the basement but do want to be covered by insurance if something breaks down there

Understandable... stuff costs an arm and a leg, might as well be prepared to use it when SHTF
