No Cowboys protested during the national anthem on Sunday. Six teammates of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick joined him for a protest during the national anthem on Sunday. Safety Eric Reid and linebacker Eli Harold kneeled beside Kaepernick. Defensive backs Antoine Bethea, Keith Reaser, Jaquiski Tartt and Rashhard Robinson all raised their fists.

Al, I am certainly no expert as regard taxes. If ya 'depreciate a property to zero' and subsequently sell that property you have to recapture the depreciation. The cost basis is another item entirely.
As to the 'profit' of 15k in second scenario, you never got the money so no profit was realized, unless that was reported on a return.
With all due respect there are time limits on recovery of these items and if they are within those limits I would suggest getting advice from better attorneys, CPA's, etc.
