The ballistics for the .308 don't really lend itself too well for long range shooting. With a 100-yard zero, the .308 drops 389 inches at 1,000 yards and drifts 100 inches in a full-value 10 mph wind.
You figgering on doing some 1000yd shooting with something that kicks less than a .30-06 Russ?

If I knew I could walk into any sporting goods store and pick up some .26 Nosler, I'd buy a rifle today, but as Tracy observed, it is a niche round and I'd hate to have a rifle that I couldn't get bullets for.
Still the military standard for sniper rifles.
Tracy beat me to it.
Four old-timers were playing their weekly game of golf. One remarked how nice it would be to wake up on Christmas morning, roll out of bed and without an argument go directly to the golf course, meet his buddies and play a round. His buddies all chimed in said, "Let's do it! We'll make it a priority - figure out a way and meet here early, Christmas morning." Months later, that special morning arrives, and there they are on the golf course.
The first guy says, "Boy this game cost me a fortune! I bought my wife a diamond ring that she can't take her eyes off of."
The second guy says, "I spent a ton too. My wife is at home planning the cruise I gave her. She was up to her eyeballs in brochures."
The third guy says "Well my wife is at home admiring her new car, reading the manual."
They all turned to the last guy in the group who is staring at them like they have lost their minds. "I can't believe you all went to such expense for this golf game. I slapped my wife on the bum and said, 'Well babe, Merry Christmas! It's a great morning - golf course or intercourse?"
With bullet weight and load, it's always going to be a trade off between range and accuracy. A lighter bullet may travel farther but is extremely subject to wind and atmospheric conditions.
If you want to counter those effects at long range you are looking at a .50 or a .338 Lapua, or the .300 magnum.

But again, there's the recoil..
I'm trying not to screw up my shoulder anymore than it already is Tracy!
