TOAK The thread of all knowledge VII
Sorry to hear that Russ, I know I've had some near misses from being in a rush and yes too lazy to get the right tool. Sucks he had to learn like that.

Damn Russ!! Thanks for not posting the pictures!! Hope the healing goes well and he has learned a little sumpin!!
Just got this from the place I usually rent from in the Smokies..
"To Our Guests,
The recent wildfire storms that hit Sevier County took a heavy toll on its residents and business owners. Approximately 40 residences in Wears Valley were lost, but we feel extremely blessed and fortunate that all of our cabins were spared and are ready for our guests to visit. In both Wears Valley and Pigeon Forge, none of the attractions or shops were affected by the fires, and are open for business. Much of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is open as normal, including many hiking trails and Cades Cove. In Gatlinburg, most of the attractions and shops on the Parkway were not affected and are expected to be open soon. We hope you will be able to come stay with us soon.
Thanks,

For years I have been trying to convince my son that he should use the proper tools for the job. As recently as two weeks ago when he was down here, I got on his *** about using the wrong tool and told him that we can go get the right tool and not risk screwing up the little part he has working on. Not sure if it is impatience or he's just plain lazy to go get the right tool but he's been lucky, until yesterday. He was mis-using a table saw and trying to make a mitre cut with it On a piece of two inch stock and had his thumb in the wrong spot. Suffice to say that blade grabbed his thumb and cut the crap out of it and now he will probably lose the last third of his thumb. Stupid. I bet I won't have to chime in with the "I told you so", he has a lifelong reminder on the end of his hand.
The pictures are really nasty by the way.

Sorry to hear Russ. Dang, that's a tough lesson.
I almost screwed up tragically 20 years ago lifting and assembling a heavy piece of AG equipment for a show, using a thick, industrial poly strap that was in-fact too light (all I had at the moment) and a decent size skid-steer loader. On top of that, my then 10 year old son was standing in front of the loader, not behind it..... where I should have placed him.
With the implement frame 4' in the air the strap broke and the metal clasp about the size of your fist missed my son's head by about 2'. He said he heard it whizz by.
I'll tell you my heart stopped and I had to sit on the ground for awhile afterwards, considering what might have happened. I shudder to this day thinking about it.
