Some definitely work better than others. Don't waste your money on the cheap Chinese ones.

I am super excited...almost to the point of wanting to also do the chain tensioner and compensator while we are in there, but gotta watch the $$$

Don't know about the '03s but mine had the evo style primary chain tensioner. We (OGMark) swapped it out too while we were at it.

Have you done yer cam plate upgrade yet?

I'd get the Canadian canooter valve. Nobody builds canooters like a Canadian!

I am unsure what has been done to the cam late, Tracy. I think the previous owner did something but haven't made the effort to pull it apart just to look.

That was the real Achilles heel of our early TCs. Definitely check your tensioner shoes for wear. Would be really bad if one gives out.

I did the SE cam plate upgrade at 42K on mine and they still looked pretty good, but that's something you definitely don't want to take chances with. The upgrade also gets you a bigger oil pump.

One more bit of advice on them. If you do the upgrade, go to the gear drive instead of chain. Gear drive gives you the option of using a lot of the newer cam setups.

You are gonna love that DD6!

Do our generation of TC88's have to be measured for crank run out before I go with the ear drive cam plate?

There has t be a joke about wives and "crank run out", right? Something like they never run out of crankiness in the mornings?

I'm not sure but I think they still had the forged crank and Timken bearings, so no. They are (IMHO) actually the best TCs to build on because you have a good solid base to work from.

Later models are where that becomes an issue. Not an expert on this, just going with what I know on my bike.

This might help.

I got to meet Bert briefly when at OGMark's.

That guy is on a whole other level..

Here's a vid on inspecting cam chain tensioners. Softy, dyna but still applies.

'03 was the first year for non-forged cranks, so run-out needs to be measured. I think, but Lou may know better, that a Baisley spring and check valve will suffice for oil flow, along with Cyco tensioner shoes. If Mark were putting 15,000/20,000 miles a year on it, I would suggest the total upgrade of the camchest.
I am ready to be shot down in flames over this.
