For economy optics it's hard to beat Nikon, already calibrated for 7.62

Look at the Magpul for open sights.. easily had for under $100 for both.

Really liked the M16 in the military, but it'd be mostly an expensive toy for me now, like my sportster. Would be a good varmint gun, but haven't done that kind of shooting in decades. Have a mini 14 in .223, must be around 40 years old now, and don't think I've used it in 10 years.
Never really liked the M16. The best thing about it (to me) was that is was light and the smaller caliber meant that ammo was lighter as well. The M16-A1 was a joke in any type of dirty environment and it can be argued that it cost lives because of the jamming issue that was mostly resolved with the A2. Still, not one of my favs. In basic we had the A2s and they still jammed if they got the least bit dirty. Just not a fan of the .223 except for varmints and medium sized game.
Will it kill? Certainly, but the 7.62 offers a much more versatile round.
The old M14 was a helluva rifle even if heavy.

So sorry to hear about that tragic incident. I had a canoe trip planned in case Hillary won, but I guess I'll put it off for a while now.

Checked my colt sights when I got home, they say colt defense on them but when compared to the Troy industries sights on my Noveske ar15 , they are identical .
