TOAK The thread of all knowledge VII
Don't remember , either Troy or Colt (iron). Right now I have a leapold vxIII 1.5X5 but I need stronger glass !
I don't hunt anymore except for Prairie dogs and it's been a few years for them, and the best (imho) rifle to shoot them would be a bolt action, mine being a Remington Stainless VS in .223.
The 1-12 twist needed for the light bullets makes a AR not normally a good choice unless barrels are changed to the 1-12 or a heavier bullet is used and I think you loose some of the geysers of guts with a heavier bullet.
Loaded with max H335, and molied barrel and 50 gr hornady or Nossler ballistic tip bullets I get about 3580 fps (best I remember) or so, lots of geysers..
Were I to get back into hunting here in MN I'd look at a 30-06 or .308 semi-auto, prob Remington again, but the average deer shot here is like 30 yards or so and a 30-30 would probably work just fine, and I have one of them.
AR might be fun, just not sure what I'd do with it.
They kind of remind me of a Harley, you buy one, then spend a lot of money to make it nice, tricked out they are fun to shoot though.

That's why I don't have one. Really liked the M16 in the military, but it'd be mostly an expensive toy for me now, like my sportster. Would be a good varmint gun, but haven't done that kind of shooting in decades. Have a mini 14 in .223, must be around 40 years old now, and don't think I've used it in 10 years.
