Anyone co-own property with family? We have a chance to buy a share of the cabin

 

That sounds like a scary deal to me.......you up for the majority of the work?

 

Right now there are 6 owners. Beth's Mom and Aunt each own 25%, her Great Aunt and 3 of her kids own 12.5% each. One of the kids wants to sell her 12.5% share. Not sure if Beth would still inherit from her Mom if we bought a piece from another family member. We would be officially on the hook for insurance and taxes instead of just helping because we are nice people. We do help quite a bit as it is. BUt if we were co-owners then we would obligated for the work or have to reimburse others for the work they do. We get a vote in things but that sounds like a mess I don't want to get into. Family and business are oil and water. That's no newsflash. The 4 smaller owners are in California and only use the cabin occasionally, like 1 week per year. They don't help with any work due to their distance. I have not inquired if they financially assist with the annual improvements and maintenance.
