Any experience with ammonia coolers. Most of the campus's AC units are ammonia based with a steam plant. I see plenty of job listings.

A little. Although it's been a while since I messed with it, I know how they work. Studied about it in trade school. A lot of places in the dairy industry use it. That is some dangerous stuff man. It can do some bad things to ya right quick like if you aren't careful.

Why yes Sir I do.
I've been amazed my AC condenser has lasted this long - was there when we purchased the house. I would "guess" 70's era unit. Still working.
My father just replaced his furnace/AC and his old unit was from the late 90's. Still looks good and worked well for him. Instead of throwing it I kept the condenser and coil.
Does it pay to replace my antique with a little newer antique? It's all R22, and I know that can get expensive......or so I'm told.
If I could luck out and my existing coil would match the newer unit....that might help (??).
Thanks, signed, a confused consumer.

EDIT: Dad's unit is from the late 80's ...........

Stan my friend, I hate to say it but you've got junk even if it does still work. Take it to the local scrap yard and get what you can out of it. Around here you can't even get rid of it that way unless you have something from a legitimate contractor saying it was removed from your own home. Lots of thieves out there that will cut one loose from a building to sell for the scrap copper and aluminum.

Sorry...

HaHaHa.... no problem.
So.....smart money should eventually go toward a new unit when the antique dies.......don't even mess with the used stuff. Gotcha.
