It starts as an "escape" usually, and by the time someone realizes they're in trouble, it's too late. At least that's how it works with most alcoholics. Rationalization has nothing to do with it when it gets to that point.
As far as amounts taken and tolerated, you would be surprised how much the body can tolerate.
