Out in some of the more backwoodsie places, when a biker pulls up to his favorite watering hole he uses those ropes to tie his bike to the hitching rail, that way it won't get away.

It is also used to display a clubs colors red/white or orange/white for example.
It is customary practice to take it from their bike and walk into the bar and say "who's is this, I'm keeping it!" as a joke.  \\;[]

A Little Bit of Yesterday
There's a history behind these old-school biker or "getback" whips. Back in the day, you'd see bikers sporting whips - hanging from their clutch or brake levers as they rode. The leather whips were usually made from the biker's club colors - to display their colors and for club recognition. But the whips were a whole lot more than just leather club colors. A biker whip could be quickly released and used "in case of emergency."

I asked Chris about this several months back. \\; He explained the same. \\; This seems to me to be quite a safety hazard!!! \\; Would a rope hangin from your bars get caught up in the wheel or perhaps worse, get caught on something as you rumble buy?

Most of them I have ever seen is hanging from the clutch lever. \\; Easier to get at than if it is hanging from the throttle side. \\; maybe if on the right side it would be just for looks...?
