I am just 118 pages into this novel which is about 1050 in length (I am afraid to check what the actual last page is for fear of spoiling the story). I used to be able to read over 100 pages a day when I worked as a Rent-A-Cop years ago. I could devour Louis L'Amour books in day or two.
Most of my reading over 30 years were specs and blueprints...

The ole man couldn't figure out why I couldn't hold a C average in math, algebra, geometry and such but got straight A's in drafting and design...

I can't learn by reading. I can learn from a story, but cannot read a book and learn something in a class assignment type read. I could read WHILE doing something, I need that hands on interaction to learn. That's how I got all my computer learning....building the PC from parts and installing software as it was needed.

Uhuh... same here, flip a manual open and grab a wrench... self taught in puters but my knowledge is based on trial and error, accentuating the error part!
