Clean used later model packs bring pretty good money. You wouldn't recover 100% but stand to recoup a nice part of the cost on the backside.
If momma goes on those long trips, she will appreciate the tour pack or at least a good wide backrest. Yes, you can be a hero !

EDIT: Chuck, buying in the slow season or around open house time might snag you a discount. I did not pay list, and secured a nice, but not huge, discount.

Strapped my ex in on a trip from Delaware to South Carolina . Had a honda vtx1300. had saddle bags and a big bag on the rack with bungees everywhere. i felt the clump and her arms were hanging down. scared the crap out of me, so i had an extra strap. she thougt i was crazy till she fell asleep again and it woke herself up.
