Actually CA does have the Castle Doctrine that covers you in the home. It can vary quite a bit though depending on county/DA.

I used to drink tequila when we would go out for my birthday each year. That was when I would only drink once a year for the sole purpose of getting drunk for my birthday. I didn't care what brand it was because someone else was usually buying...or I was too drunk to know if I was paying for it.

 

Been lucky in that I haven't had that experience, I guess.
