Lou, if you're having trouble with finding thimbles to fit, try making a little cot out of leather.

Yup. Every time I look at my yard, I just shake my head.

I have laid my share of sod. Our house in Loveland had nothing growing in the back yard other than weeds when I moved in. My wife, bless her heart, would find free sod on Craigslist. I used up vacation days to bring it home and lay it down. Some of it had yellow/dry edges or patches. You could see the seams for a season or 2.

That house was a foreclosure, but had fresh paint inside and out, new carpet and tile. The front yard was in OK shape, but the back yard had been ignored. And there was no sprinkler system for either. I put a lot of sweat equity into that joint.

I think the only thing worse than laying sod is moving rock/gravel.

No sprinklers here either. Lots of rock. And clay. Been fighting this yard 20 years and I'm about to give up.
