The last 10 motorcycles I've bought, including the Harleys and Urals, wouldn't add up to one new Road Glide Ultra. I did buy a new car in 1986... and never been tempted to again. When I junk a car, it's total annual cost including parts and maintenance (not gas and insurance) is always well below $1000/year. In Minnysota, a new car dissolves before it gets near that annual cost.
'86 'bout the same time I bought my '87 suzuki samauri....1 of 2 vehicles I ever owned that lasted the life of the lien......o6 RAM Is the other, that I still own/run/use/abuse.
Yup we really do get ripped off by auto companies. The stories of planned absolescence, are innumerable around the Detroit area where the people who build them also reside. I was succesful in getting doors replaced on one brand of vehicle on three different occasions on three different vehicles that I bought through their 10 year, 100,000 mile rust perforation warranty. I finally bought my Chevy and of course it cost a little more and right around 7 years it also was perforated, but not just the doors, through both rear fenders and rockers LOL. Chevy graciously offered to step up and pay for 50 percent of the repair. And quoted me 7,200, my half only 3600 bucks LOL. Then of course there was the one Ford truck with the wierd oil leak. Turned out the OIL PAN rusted through on the 302! If any of the jJapanese companies step up and offer a real 10 or 15 year anti rust through warranty and then actually plated coated both sids of the steel it would be all over for the big 3. But, I am too old to not buy American. I have worked for the American Auto Workers in Detroit in one form or another all my life. I've seen their hearts and they bleed red American blood and I will never abandon them. Period. Fornicate, mutilate, grind em into aggregate the imports. America first. Just my personal opinion. No offense meant to others.
Ya know we once had a real car company president named Lee Iaccoca. He actually went on TV personally and claimed that their new warranty was 7yars /70,000 miles and 10 years 100,000 on rust through. His stated reason was those who built em best backed them the best. Caught Ford and Chevy flat footed and they scrambled to catch up...but never matched them! LOL! Those days are long gone, the only decent warranty available cost extra and it costs as much as a complete new engine! Pathetic. The big 3 have the resources to build them better...if they wanted to.

Chevy 3yr 36,000 pathetic.Chrysler announced they knocked theirs back to 5/60k to be more consistant withn other industry standards like Chevy according to one article in Truck Trend and just try to get Fords numbers from thier convoluted web site in simple terms, they think it's on a need to know basis and ifn ya don't buy one you can kiss dere ***.Found it on Edmunds 5/60. Chevy may be 5?100? on the full size? on 2016s? Or is that drivetrain only. Hell ya have to be an attorney to sort through the bullshit...
ya know toyoda does a frame off replacement on their pu/trucks, and the werk is done with american mechanics on american soil. Just saying thats more than the big 3 or anyone else does. They do make a good car/truck. As far as longevity goes.
