Cage or Bike, watch out for deer
It's been a few weeks now so I can discuss this without getting too upset. I know we all are concerned almost every time we ride about the cages on the road however they are not the only hazards out there. About 26 years ago I hit a deer riding a bike doing 60 down the highway so I watch pretty close at the road sides now and know they are a danger to bikers. I also know they are a danger to those in cages too. About 3 weeks ago I was riding home from a PGR mission and stopped for a moment to call my wife as she had left me a message. When I called her I found out she was at the wedding of one of our nephews and said I should meet her there so I decided to go even though I wasn't really dressed to attend a wedding. The wedding was great and I wished the happy couple a long and happy marriage. As we were leaving we took an opportunity to welcome his bride to our family. Tragically two days later on the trip to their honeymoon location as she was driving a deer was on the freeway which she swerved to miss and she was killed on impact. She was only 20 years old. If anyone is interested in the news story or in seeing the tribute video that was played at her funeral here are the links. I'm actually in both though just briefly (54 seconds into the news story and then at 8:53 in the tribute video). Should be pretty obvious which one is me in both of them. Anyway, figured I would take this chance to both share this tragic story and mention to everyone that cages are not our only hazard out there.

Tragic story. I remember years ago when I was long haul trucking, my lead driver told me if I ever had one jump in front of me, line the truck up square. Never swerve.
Luckily, I have never had one jump in front of me, knock on wood.

A couple years ago I was riding on a rural road approaching a tight turn and a lady in a car coming the other way was honking her horn wildly. I slowed down thinking a county mounty was running radar. Well, it turned out that a buck was looking to cross the road just as I rounded the bend. God Bless that lady.

Only good deer is a dead one. Hit mine about 7 yrs ago. I'll have the limp and scars forever but I know I'm lucky to be here.
