My company allows every employee to take a week off to use as volunteer time (VTO). I'd like to use a few days later this month. My goal is to participate in an Patriot Gaurd Riders event that I normally would not be able to b/c of work. I'd also like to volunteer at a Soup Kitchen, Homeless Shelter or Pet Shelter.

Anyone with recommendations? Lets use this as the official thread! Maybe we turn it into a FL Crew Volunteer Event....

Pop warner holds there superbowl at disney every year. Lasts 10 days and hosts about 10,000 kids from US and territories. It just finished yesterday so too late for this year but next year will work for you. I volunteer every year its a lot of fun and some great football.

 

I worked with the Sheriff's Office Explorers (kids) Post #400 to help feed the hungry on Thanksgiving. It was very rewarding. I don't have any suggestion, but what ever you do you will get satisfaction.

 

Well, since you're in Manatee County, there is the Humane Society of Manatee, Bishop, & Humane Society of Sarasota..

 

Patriot Guard is hard to schedule.
Do you have to volunteer with a agency, or can you just go down to your local fishing hole and pick up trash/used fishing line? Like slow rider said, humane society may need/ want help for a day pushing a broom? But you know how 'liability' works out, it equals 'paperwork' and may not be worth-it to some.
Another idea...how much is your time worth? 10 bucks an hour? Volunteer 8 hours to St. Jude Childrens Hospital ($80). You can choose your own charity.....but that is one of mine.
Good that you want to volunteer in any capacity.

Yeah I was wondering the same thing. I only have 8 hrs of community time but gotta use it or loose it and I luv helping out good causes.

 

indeed better to serve others...
some simple ideas where the "liability" paperwrk can be avoided:
neighborhood or public park/beach trash pickup,
local food, clothes, toys collection for donation,
help neighbors or adjacent foreclosed properties w/yard wrk, house maint, etc
