Does spraying peroxide loosen then up enough to get them off with a rag on the windshield?
The problem is it’s not just the windshield, they get everywhere. In the engine, under the tank, in the frame, everywhere and they have a very unpleasant odor. My next door neighbor just had a visitor arrive from up north (I live in the Keys) and the front of their truck is black.

I have seen bugs out as late as early June; I attend a convention in Orlando every Memorial Day Weekend and they are the reason I always catch a ride with someone or rent a car.

By the way, I assume you plan on switching over to the Turnpike before you get to Miami. I 95 is very dangerous south of Ft. Lauderdale and you won’t like where I 95 ends nor will you care for the stretch of US 1 you will be on prior to Florida City. If the bugs are gone you might want to consider a different route. I would get off 95 south of Stewart (exit 101?) and take 76 to 441 to 27 to 997 which takes you to Florida City.

Oh, I forgot to mention the speed traps:

Jew Fish Creek Bridge north of Key Largo, both directions and they use long distance laser.

If you take Card Sound Road they like to set up between the flashing light south of Ocean Reef and Key Largo.

The West (south) end of Marathon where the speed drops from 45 to 35.

You will find this one set up 75% of the time. Also, pay attention to what they say about the Key Deer area. http://www.speedtrap.org/city/1941/Keys

The County SO runs some Dodge Chargers; they are dark grey and black, they have no visible markings, the tags are not gov’t tags and their only purpose in life is to give you a ticket.

Do not drink and ride anywhere in the Keys.

You can also take the Fl Turnpike all the way to Florida City, it's not nearly as bad as I-95 (like SA315B says...avoid 95 at all costs in Broward and Dade counties...) I usually get on the TP at Jupiter and go south...you can get on the TP extension just south of Ft Lauderdale (Hollywood-Miramar area) and cruise right into US 1 headed south...check out the Last Chance Saloon in Florida City....then take Card Sound Road south and stop in at Alabama Jacks, I can almost guarantee you never been any where like AJ's....once you've had your fill of AJ's go on down to Key Largo and rest for a bit at The Caribbean Club, Bogart made a movie there back in the 40's I think, place hasn't changed much since. If your still able to ride... head on down to Islamorada and have lunch at Hog Heaven, good food and the scenery is pure tropics. Most of all ride safe, spend lot's of money, and enjoy!

Hey, thanks for the travel tips on I95 and the Turnpike. One of the guys is picking his wife up at the Ft. Lauderdale airport on our way down. I assume if we come down the turnpike there is an "easy" on and off for that airport? We are staying the first night at the Largo Lodge in Key Largo. Had planned to eat at The Encore (think we can walk there from the Lodge ). Sounds like you recommend riding the Card Sound Road instead of US 1 into Key Largo. We might try that too.

Thanks!

To get to the airport, get off the TP at the I-595/St Rd 84 exit and go east, you will see the airport and the exit , can't miss it. What day is that gonna be? If it's a Fri-Sun gimme a heads up and maybe we can meet up. If you heading south from the airport I could escort you to the Dade County line....I stay outta Dade county as much as possible...

We will be coming though on Thursday, June 2. Plan to be at the airport around 2 pm and then head on to Key Largo for the night. That would be great to meet up, but it will be on a Thursday. I would assume the best is to go back west on I-595 and get back on the TP and head south. Looks like we have the option right after getting off the TP to take Card Sound Rd. Do recommend that or just stay on US 1 to Key Largo? Also, coming south on I95 is it best to jump onto the TP as far north as Fort Pierce? I assume you have to stop and pay cash tolls on the TP. I hate that on the motorcycle, but sounds like that is a lot better than staying on I95!! Do you have an idea of the total cash tolls it would take between Fort Pierce and Florida City (so I will know how much cash to keep in my windshield bag!!). Heading back north the following week, we are taking the west route across US 41 to I75 to Atlanta and back though the Smokey Mountains. That should be nice to avoid the Miami area on the return trip!!

Thanks!!

I have a Sunpass so I can't help with the tolls...Unfortunately I will be working on Thursday (damn it), but you are correct, just go back the way you came to the TP and head south. I prefer Card Sound Rd , it seems to less congested most times, and a little better scenery. Hopefully when you stop at Alabama Jacks the air raid siren won't go off...Turkey Point nuke plant is in that area and they test the warning sirens on occasion . We were there once when they did and it's deafening and seems to go on and on and on....
