GPS tracking app for smart phones
Is anyone using anyof the GPS tracking apps for smart phones. I have two thoughts for the use of a tracking app. First if I'm on a long ride alone especially at night it would be nice for Spunky to be able to log in and see where I am. That way if I were to run off the road or something maybe they would find me before the buzzards got to me. Second it would be nice if a bunch of us are meeting up somewhere to be able to tell where the other group is. I've been playing with Google Latitude but have'nt gotten very deep into it. So it might work. I think for somthing to be practicle first and foremost you would have to be able to toggle it off and on easily ( idon't want folks knowing where I am all the time) It would also be nice to have an app that would work on most any smart phone (iphone or android). Some of you computer geeks uh..I mean gurus jump in here please. Does such an app exist? Are there concerns of privacy issues even with the app turned off? What do you think?

I looked at Latitude. I think you have to check in with it to update your location.
Been looking at the SPOT Personal Tracker for the reasons you stated. Several of the guys we were tracking on the Hoka Hey had this device.
Location updated regularly and it can be checked by the Internet. It has a button to check in and let home know everything is OK and a couple more for emergencies including 911.

A little pricey as it requires a subscription but it could come in handy and gives the folks at home some piece of mind.
Anyway, just an idea. Not necessarily a good one.

Google Latitude is a great FREE app. It will update your position automatically while the app is running in the background on the phone. Folks link-up with Google Latitude online and you are set.
The GPS receiver on your phone sends you position via the application to a phone tower then on to Google to overlay on their maps. The phone user (owner) controls who has access to your position.
None of it complicated, typically works great, with an occasional blackout that simply freezes your last known position. I had it going for our trip to Sturgis and back. Only a couple of times did the whole thing keep me in one place too long. Once it refreshed, my position jumped a couple of hundred miles. LOL.
Hard to beat FREE.
