GPS tracking app for smart phones

Yea, for someone to follow you they need to have access to the internet to follow on the website, but they have a mobile tracking version as well. Like I was mentioning earlier, I mostly use it for when I take longer trips so the wife knows I am OK. Works awesome for that.

You don't need your own page. When you sign up on Instatracker site, they provide a link to the page that tracks you. Then just share that link with whoever you want to be able to track you. That's all there is to it!

GPS stands for Global Positioning System and true GPS uses a constellation of satellites that circle the earth. Cell phones/smartphones "GPS" uses cellular towers to determine your position. This only works if the are towers are nearby. Cellular based GPS is not "global" and doesn't work many of the more interesting places you might want to ride, the types of places you might find yourself alone.
SPOT messenger uses the GPS satellite system for position location and uploads your data to the internet via the Globalstar satellite system. Spot is limited in data transmission to area's that include base stations to receive the data relay from the Globalstar satellites. Here's the coverage map... pretty comprehensive for most folks. Well, maybe not Masterblaster

For tracking and sharing with SPOT you can't beat Jason Jonas' site Spotwalla.
http://www.spotwalla.com/
Jason's a biker and set up the site shortly after the first SPOT units hit the market for the LD motorcycle community. It was originally called Spot Trip Manager.
Here's the track for the UCC World Record set last year by John Ryan.
Prudhoe Bay, AK to Key West, FL. in 86 hours, 15 minutes, 5632 miles.

Here's my track in 2008 to Sturgis and back.

I did beta testing for Spot before they went into production, but have no connection with the company at this time.

Fish head has a point, many of you guys with the smartphones still don't have a true "gps" on it. However, I do know that the Droid, Droid X and Droid 2's all have true gps, as for the other android based phones and the iphones I'm not sure. As far as apps go again I have no idea, mostly cause I unlike my father am not bright enough to think about things like this out of the blue.
(or it could be I don't mind being lost in the middle of nowhere, not knowing where I am, or how I'm going to get out of whatever mess I wind up in, so long as I get out somehow that is.)
I will be looking for some in my spare time, won't be able to try them first hand but I'm sure the pops won't mind being the test subject if any catch my eye.
