Hang tight, and you will get some good replies on route, food and accomodations.

Hey Adam,

Tamiami Trail from Tampa to South of Naples is very slow going, lots of lights and traffic. Even more so this time of year. When will you be down? When I leave from the Ft. Myers area I head down I75 to the Alley to 29 to Tamiami Trail (41) to Chrome Ave. to Card Sound Rd. to US1 to the Keys. Another option would be to go east out of Tampa and travel the middle of the state. There are others here that could guide you better then I for that route. Depending on the route you choose we will be glade to suggest stops along the way. As for a place to stay in Key West I like the Casa 325.

Just my .02, but this route will take you through the best of the Everglades on the way down.

That's pretty much the way I would go with the addition of Card Sound Rd. and a visit to Alabama Jacks.
This map shows the change for Adam's benefit.

In that case you will probably want to follow the east coast down. Maybe some on that coast can jump in with a route.

If you are going to Key West from Tampa this is the route to take. Skip Card Sound on the way in; there is an elevated bridge over Jew Fish Creek (just before you get to Key Largo) that offers a nice view. Take Card Sound on the way back and hit Alabama Jack’s for lunch.

How long are you going to be in Key West? Consider staying in Marathon, it is a nice 1 to 1 ½ hour ride to Key West and it (staying in Marathon) is easier on the wallet. If nothing else think about staying there your last night in the Keys, you will wake up 1 to 1/2 hours closer to home.
