I go every year in the Spring & Fall. The middle of April usually provides the best weather. Temps have started to warm up a bit by then, and in a "typical" year, May is a rainy month.
A bit far off to commit to anything, April would be my choice...even though April showers bring May flowers.
I would rather warmer rain....

In the Smokey mountains, May rains bring June flowers.
You can never bank on the weather, but in my experience, mid through the end of April typically provides the best balance of minimum rain and warmer temps. Or, you wait till June when it does warm up and the mountains get crowded with summer tourists.
