Just ordered a 1250 kit cause they are running a awesome sale. (450 for a blem) I was originally shopping around for a bigger bike (currently have 883L) but decided this was the better route. I have read that after the upgrade, the clutch slips because it can't handle the power. Do i NEED to purchase an upgraded clutch?

If you plan on using all that new 1250 power a new clutch might be a good idea.

NO

Get a heavier spring. If you want buy a new clutch pack and keep it for just in case go ahead. Or replace it just becuase your going to be replacing the spring anyway.

But the short answer is

NO

I have a 1250 kit on my bike plus other power upgrades and the clutch is holding fine , I have had no issues at all...except for keeping the front wheel on the ground...

Since you have a rubbermount 883, yes you will need a new spring.

The 883 has a lighter spring than the 1200 in the '04+ bikes. It will slip with the 1250 power (which is usually a bit more than just your standard 1200).

If you are doing that, you might want to look in to the extra plate kits that eliminate the failure prone spring plate. I have an Energy One clutch in my bike that I really like.

There is an excellent thread by Mich on installing his kit, which is well worth searching out. That will help a great deal in planning and doing your build.

Exactly right, the diaphram spring isn't strong enough, but if it's a temporary thing to get by until winter you would be ok.

I went through this with hammer a few months back.

I've got an h-d heavy duty spring I used for 3000 miles when I did my basic conversion. If your interested I'd sell it cheap. Right now I upgraded to the screamin eagle clutch but energy one is a lot less expensive.

So a heavier spring should only be a temporary fix? In the long run getting the new clutch would be the better option?
