Just ordered a 1250 kit cause they are running a awesome sale. (450 for a blem) I was originally shopping around for a bigger bike (currently have 883L) but decided this was the better route. I have read that after the upgrade, the clutch slips because it can't handle the power. Do i NEED to purchase an upgraded clutch?

Get a heavier spring. If you want buy a new clutch pack and keep it for just in case go ahead. Or replace it just becuase your going to be replacing the spring anyway.
But the short answer is
NO

Since you have a rubbermount 883, yes you will need a new spring.
The 883 has a lighter spring than the 1200 in the '04+ bikes. It will slip with the 1250 power (which is usually a bit more than just your standard 1200).
If you are doing that, you might want to look in to the extra plate kits that eliminate the failure prone spring plate. I have an Energy One clutch in my bike that I really like.
