2003 Sporty - shift points? Lugging?
#21
Coming from 10 years of sport bikes, this is my number one concern with riding a Harley. Used to winding the motor up to 14k, can only do about half that now. I usualy shift much earlier than what others here are chiming in with, about 5 mph higher than the book. But again, 1200 vs 883, two differnet animals.
- 20mph - 1st to 2nd
- 30mph - 2nd to 3rd
- 40mph - 3rd to 4th
- 50mph - 4th to 5th

I came up with my shift point by listening to the engine and also by the way it feels. I don't have a tachometer so I have marked my speedometer with nail polish lines at max speed according to HD and found that they are a little bit off when the chatter started just before my line was hit .
Around 85 vibration starts and have only had it to 90 so far. I don't know what top speed is... my red line in 5th gear is at 110 but never been there on this bike.

It's not wise to do this in first gear, but on a clear road just rev the darned thing out in second, perhaps third, to see what it will do. Don't *****-foot around! You can't over-rev it. The numbers in the owners manual are very low indeed and you should routinely use significantly higher road speeds in each gear IMHO.
