I also have a Triumph America 865 cc that I'm leaving just the way it is. We were on vacation and we went into the HD shop to use the rest room and my wife, who does not share my enthusiasm for motorcycles, saw a 2008 anniversary model copper-top XL1200 and wanted it because it was pretty. I tried to talk her out of it, our daughter tried to talk her out of it, her best friend tried to talk her out of it, but she had made up her mind to spend money on something she was never going to use. She has a monkey on her back about shopping for stuff she doesn't need and won't use. The previous owner had left it stock. So I'm putting on the Big Sucker and Khrome Werks slip-ons and stopping right there. I know I need an adjunct for the EFI and want to keep it as simple as possible. I don't remember which year it was, 2004 or 2007, but the newer Sporties have a better cam then did my 2002 so I have no reason to do anything else. The PCV is way more than I need.
I'm now leaning towards the FuelMoto EFI Microtuner but I'll wait for more responses.
Thank you all.
From your post it sounds like you want to accommodate the intake and exhaust changes by fattening up the AFR a bit, but spend the least $.

The XiED will get that done for you for $100. It will do a much better job than the more expensive dealer download.

Here is a thread with all the popular options, pros and cons.

Thanx. I do not push the rev limit and am more interested in mid-range 2500-4500. I also don't care about top speed but luv acceleration. Which ... XiED or X14iED ?
Also, and I know you sell the XiED, would the FuelMoto Micro Tuner have any advantage?
It seems to have a box with computer stuff as opposed to cables with something in the middle. I do not mean to be flippant.

I'm curious about this as well. If one combines a fuel pack and the XIEDs is there a benefit? or could it only be one or the other.

For your bike I would use the XiED.

The FM Micro Tuner is better than the XiED. The XiED changes the closed loop AFR (and the Long Term Fuel Trim for Open Loop) to a fixed amount. For what you want, this is the budget way to go.

However, the FM Micro can change the AFR to whatever you want...so it is much more flexible to dial in the best AFR for any given set of mods. It is also twice as expensive as the XiED, and does not have the ability to change the timing.

If you want more than what the XiED will do, then I would skip the Micro and go to a PCV.

Yeah, it can get a bit confusing, frustrating and expensive. I always look at what I want out of a bike, what the budget is for the bike, then make a decision accordingly.

Myself, for my bikes, I will use either an XiED product for budget solutions where I don't need every bit of performance, or if I want the most I can get out of the bike I will use a Power Vision.

A PCV from Fuel Moto with double warranty and unlimited support, is a good budget compromise between the low end and top of the line.

Hope that helps.

Lot's of guys run the older fuel pak and XiED together, there is a definite benefit.

XiED primarily addresses the closed loop portion of the tune (and only indirectly the open loop).

Fuel Pack addresses the open loop portion of the tune.

A couple of notes-

The newer Fuel Packs also address the closed loop portion of the tune.

The closed loop portion of the factory tune is where the EPA has really caused HD to lean it out too much. The factory open loop portion of the tune is not that bad at all for Stage 1 mods....could it be better, yeah, but it is not not dangerously lean at all.

Thank you, Kevin. Having only had carb bikes I knew nothing about these things.

Default XiED

Kevin, what A/F do you get with this? If it is 14 would a Micro configured to 13.8 be better? I want the smoothest ride possible, not necessarily the most power as this bike has plenty for me.

Well, I just went and read some tech stuff on the nightrider site. I guess the XiED at 14.2 would be better than X14. I have to think slowly about the difference between high RPM and high MPH. Anything over 4000 rpm in 5th gear will get me a speeding ticket in no time.
So. it doesn't make any difference of what combo air filter & exhaust is put on for stage 1?

Does the XL ViED give the same mess around variabilities as the Micro Tuner?

At 14.0:1 you will get smooth acceleration. None of that stutter/hesitation/surging that you get with the stock tune.

For a 2014 Sportster, the XL-ViED-14 is the best fit to get that done in the XiED family.

The XL-ViED-14 does give an adjustment range of 14.2 to 13.9 for each cylinder, but that is not anywhere near the adjustment capability that the FM micro tuner has.

It does not matter what A/C - exhaust combo you have. It will even work with the stock ac-exhaust to give smoother acceleration.

The following chart is of a 2012 Twin Cam, and the 14's are even leaner (including the Sportsters), but it gives you an idea of how lean they are running with the factory tune and how and XiED product fixes that.

Regardless of the tuner you decide on, you are going to LOVE the Khrome Werks 3" HP+ slip-ons!
