Few things as I've owned both..
* Around here anyway, no one thinks Sporties are entry level, at least any more.. MOCO used to promote this view - Does anyone remember the ride a Sportie for a year, step up to a BT and we'll give you full purchase price on trade?
* Dealers my not push Sporties because the markup on these is slim
* A BT is not an easier ride than a Sportie in general. On the highway or on long trips, The BT is much easier BUT general riding, I LOVE the Sportie because other than a Bonnie, It maybe the easiest bike in the world to ride.
* On a short trip or to clear my head, Id rather ride the XL over the FL. For distance its always the FL

I don't understand the Sportster vs bagger tension. In fact, I don't understand the tension between ANY two bikes on planet earth.
My current stable has a Sportster, Heritage Softail, VMax, KLR 650, a Ural sidecar, BMW 1200 RT, and a Suzuki DR 200. M/cycles are my hobby and it doesn't matter the make or size.
Please don't make me choose between any of them!
I like 'em ALL.

Try demoing a Triumph Thunderbird Storm. You may want to leave your checkbook at home

my first bike is a sportster. i like it, i will probably keep it but i will also most likely get a bigger bike in the future as well.
the only thing is i dont understand the hatred towards the sportster. im new to the motorcycle scene, and just joined this forum and the xl forum. i keep finding threads about this type of thing.

5. Vests
6. Chaps.
7. Leather Pants.
8. Doo rags.
9. Leather anything.

Ill stop there, but you get the idea. Ive never seen so many people so concerned over what other people ride, wear, or like.
Easily the biggest troll forum ive read. But, it does make for decent entertainment while working.
