never understood the logic in most sportster purchases. buy one for 9000 spend 6000 in upgrades sell it two years later for 5000 just to buy a dyna
and since im around bikes all day I see this alot
Because if the Sportster had a decent seat and suspension off the Show room floor they would sell very few Dyna's that's why. You have to realize most Harley riders don't work on their own bikes. They trade up at great expense compared to the little it costs to put a awesome seat and suspension on a Sportster yourself. The Sportster is a fast reseller meaning from a profit standpoint a dealership probably makes more money selling and turning sportsters then a Dyna or Softail . As far as I know the Sportster is still the number one selling bike Harley Davidson makes world wide.

I've been on my 883 for 6 years and i'm content with it. The only other HD I would consider if I had money to throw away other than my Sportster would be the touring line. I just don't like the looks of the Dyna or Softails line and would never buy either. I have about $2000 in upgrades for a nearly new bike I paid $4500 cash for. Had I bought my bike at the stealer they would of asked 8k+ for it. I got $6500 in it. If I ever decide to buy a bagger I won't sell my one of a kind. You humor me with your disposable motorcycle mentality .

I'll be honest I only bought a sportster because it was the only bike I could afford. This doesn't mean I think they aren't cool as hell, If I could I would have bought a fat boy or street bob. I wanted a cheap bike to get my feet wet and not worry about laying it down and I didn't want anything other than an hd so the sporty met all the criteria. And given the choice between a 4,500 sporty and a 30 k touring with all the plastic I would ride the sporty 100 times out of 100. Like somebody said earlier most of the people who "wouldn't buy a sportster" probably don't or haven't ever rode. And there are a few veteran riders that work at the dealer that ride sportsters. And after being on the forums from what I see the sporster owners are some of the most hard core enthusiasts.

Had a neighbor ask me if my Bob was a Sportster.... I just said yea, it's bigger brother.
People at work are pretty cool, no issue when I ride to the mill (like tomorrow). Have to watch the bike all day though, nasty part of town....
Had to add, I had a Sporty 883/1200, sorry to this day I sold that bike.... Fun bike to ride!

We have 5 of us at work that ride Harley's plus the owner rides a Harley, with one Honda GW rider, so none of us deal with ignorance and there is not a d#^% thing wrong with owning a Sporty, I had one and it ran great.

as of December last year the number 1 selling model from 1990 to present is the fatboy. and no I don't own one. I just remember that little fact from a brochure HD put out. and yes sportsters were a very close second.

and as far as what you paid for your bike you did good.
and you hit the nail on the head with the first part of your post. there's nothing wrong with owning a sportster they are just way overpriced with all the cheap azz parts that come stock by the time you do all the mods to make it nice ride you could have bought a fatboy
