DOT5 doesn't absorb water, but water vapour gets in all hydraulic systems. If it isn't absorbed (as it is by DOT3 and DOT4) it settles in the system, which is not a good thing! The fluid itself does deteriorate and one of the reasons it changes colour over time is to indicate that. A refreshed system in my experience, over several decades, does indeed feel 'better'.
i literally bleed my fluid today and was on the fence about sticking dot 5 in my 07. i just used more dot 4. my braking does not feel better. I'm trying to get more responsive braking. i changed the front and rear pads and did the bleed. still mushing breaking. i think the hoses need to be manlier... what do you guys think? that is probably the last thing i do before ditching stock brakes.

The purple turns to amber over time. I've never seen it go black!
Never mix DOT5 with other hydraulic fluids! If your reservoir cap says DOT4 on it, that is what you should use. Those two fluids react badly over time (I have first hand experience!) and can cause internal corrosion, also form a jello-like substance that isn't good for braking with.
If you have mushy brakes, you may have a little air trapped. The Tech Brakes forum has tips on brake bleeding, which may help improve things.
