Blowing Oil???

RE: Blowing Oil???
Normal?? I dunno. Common..Yep. This sounds like the oil blow by issue. I'm going to assume the oil is on the right side of the bike. It's coming from the air cleaner. I bet if you take the air cleaner off, you'll find the air filter to be totally saturated with oil. I had this problem. First I was told..Sportster do that. Then I was told, that shouldn't happen (which I agreed with), but that dealership couldnt' fix the problem. Then I was told I ride the bike to hard...WHAT???!!!!!
Finally I was told if the bike has this problem, pretty much the only was to fix it, is to install a Screamin Eagle Air Cleaner. At first I thought that was BS. But then I looked into how and why the problem originated. The issue is the bango bolts from the heads into the air cleaner are designed to "mist" oil into the air cleaner. Assuming the carb will suck the "misted" oil in through the manifold. In some cases that just doesn't happen. After I replaced 3 air filters (about every 3,000 - 3,500 miles) I decided to try the Screamin Eagle.
That air clean kit, has 2 tubes that go over the bango bolts, and direct the "misted" oil straight into the manifold. Thus eliminated the "luck" factor. I now have 6,000 miles after the new air cleaner, and no more oil blow by issues.
That's a sorry way to eliminated the problem, but it's the only one I know of that works.
Also, don't run the bike totally full of oil. Best way is to keep it half way between the low mark and the full mark.

RE: Blowing Oil???
Thanks Sportypig. My dad told us that it was pretty common, his Dyna does the same thing (His 07 Ultra dosn't... weird). The hubby has a FRAM washable air filter we'll see how it stands up to the oil issue. I hope to save enough to buy him some screaming eagle pipes for his b-day.. and now a screaming eagle air cleaner. But it will be worth it, getting oil off of chrome is a b!tch.

RE: Blowing Oil???
There are also several hihg hiprformance A/C's that don't feed the blow-by back into the A/C. The one I have runs a new SS bypass line down under the frame and eliminates the problem nicely. The carb was really designed to mix air & fuel anyway, not air, fuel & oil. You can see the bypass line in my sig pic running horizontally below the A/C cover.
