I had plans for pipes and such before I got mine. Now that I have ridden it quite a bit I have decided it's just fine the way it is. It starts great, hastremendous power, sounds good with the stock pipes and looks great, I don't want to change anything. I may change my mind in the future but for now it does everything it was suposed to do, in factbeyond my expectations.
If you are happy then leave it as is. If you ever re-tune it, well then you will know what stage 1 is all about. To each his own...

The longer I run the stock setup the louder these pipes get.
I think.

I finished stage 1 last weekend VH shortshots SE air cleaner and rejet. I did not get to ride it much but tha little I did, wow what difference. No more carb farts pulls harder off a start and the pipes sound better than before I put on the new air cleaner and jets. Makes me wonder why I took so long to do it. The stock air cleaner and pipes choake the air flow through the motor that is why 2004-2006 sportster all seem to have carb fart problems in their stock state.

I've noticed the same thing. After 10K miles, my exhaust seems deeper in tone and a bit louder. At speed, with FF helmet and ear plugs, and no W/S, it sounds pretty good, if a bit muted.

Of course, all I have to do is go anywhere where there are other Harleys, and I'm reminded that my bike is still pretty quiet

Did you guys get the SE stage 1 or go online and DYI? I want to do air cleaner, rejet, and slip-ons all at once... what would I be looking at $$$-wise? Would I need any special tools for DYI? thanks

I agree completely. Sorry if I offend some of you, but saying you don't need Stage 1 is being naive. Until you go there, you won't know just how bad the stock factory tuned motor is. It's worth evey penny and the costisn't all that much.

Probably 90% of the guys I know andride with have done nothing more than swap out the exhaust.

If their bike sounds good, and runs fine with no problems at normal cruising speeds, they could care less about spending hundreds of dollars to pick up a few additional horsepower.
